Apprenticeships to top careers
Hello! I'm Oscar, an AtkinsRéalis apprentice heading into my third year on the Apprentice Consultant Development Programme (ACDP). I help our clients manage projects, programmes, and portfolios, all while studying for my BSc in Project Management at Northumbria University.
Right now, I'm working as a PMO Analyst in our Transformation, Delivery, and Consulting (TDC) team. I get to collaborate with clients in transforming their core PMO processes, which means improving how they manage and oversee their projects to be more efficient and effective.
Career progression and learning opportunities
Not too long ago, AtkinsRéalis teamed up with National Highways as their go-to partner for delivering technology programmes. This partnership also provides the resources and expertise needed for significant projects, digital work, and developing new capabilities.
In my apprenticeship role, I help National Highways with their Digital Strategy as part of the Digital Services Project Management Office (PMO) team. My job involves analyzing how the team manages projects and offering solutions to fix any inefficiencies I find. My work has guided their efforts to improve and update their services.
As a degree apprentice, I deliver a sustainable future
A few key initiatives empower me to deliver a better future at AtkinsRéalis. One is the organization's focus on renewable energy or sustainable infrastructure projects. Another is the subsequent continuous learning opportunities that keep us degree apprentices upskilled on new best practices for sustainability. I've always cared about the planet and often wondered what more I can do to improve it, and AtkinsRéalis has been great at giving me opportunities to learn this.
I feel I have job security in my AtkinsRéalis apprenticeship
My confidence in having chosen a stable and secure career path has only grown since starting my project management apprenticeship at AtkinsRéalis. There's a strong emphasis on feedback, and because it's consistent across all my workstreams, I always know what to improve on and how much my teams value my contribution. It gives me a real sense of security and motivates me to do my best. The prospect of starting a career while learning felt more daunting than it actually was. The scheme is well-structured, making it easy to balance work and study without one interfering with the other. I quickly got used to it!
Promoting equality, diversity & inclusion as a degree apprentice
Equality, diversity & inclusion (ED&I) is a significant topic at AtkinsRéalis. I see its impact and consideration across my various workstreams at least daily, through emails to showcase different ED&I groups, meetings, and moments at the start of meetings. My experience with ED&I comes mostly from my work as a STEM Volunteering Lead for London and surrounds. There was a big emphasis on working with schools and children from lower socio-economic areas or backgrounds to ensure everyone has the exposure and experience they need to feel capable and motivated to pursue a future career as a STEM professional.
Are you looking for alternatives to university?
Don't wait or deliberate. Just apply for an AtkinsRéalis apprenticeship! You won't regret it. And I'd recommend applying sooner rather than later. As you can imagine, the application is very comprehensive, so it takes a little while to complete. Secondly, emphasize your passion, USP, and where you can add value. It will help your application stand out from the rest. Lastly, take your time with the application to ensure it's the best it can be—chipping away at it day by day makes it much less overwhelming. Good luck!
